Highlights from the Frankfurt
Book Fair
New York — Last
month Doris Michaels attended the Frankfurt Book Fair and had
over 60 appointments. Meetings were held in the Agent Center
and Hotel Hessischer Hof lobby with subagents, international
publishers, authors, and other publishing professionals from
around the world.
Many additional rights deals were
closed on the books highlighted on the hot list and we gathered
interest in other books on our rights list. We also filled
the two open positions for subagents. Pat
Duffy's project sold by Faye Bender to W. H. Freeman with
the enticing title 50 BLUE CATS FOR DAD really got people
talking. The unique book describing synesthesia grabbed the
attention of the largest international publishers and subagents.
We currently have an auction situation in Germany with offers
pending in other major countries.
The
first book by Jeff Fox entitled HOW TO BECOME CEO now has
17 international translation deals in place and is in the
tenth printing with close to 150,000 copies. The Finnish sale
was closed at the fair by new subagent Ann-Christine Danielsson.
The Italian and French rights deals were just concluded by
Frederique Porretta. The second book entitled HOW TO BECOME
A RAINMAKER is gathering just as much attention ahead of the
Spring 2000 Hyperion publishing date. The German rights for
RAINMAKER were snatched up by Econ Verlag following their
great success with CEO, which was prominently displayed in
their booth in an attractive exhibit with many copies on view.
The
British version of Jason Kelly's THE NEATEST LITTLE GUIDE
TO MAKING MONEY ONLINE was a featured book in the Nicholas
Brealey catalogue and will be available around the same time
as this fourth US title in the Plume imprint of Penguin Putnam.
We have many other international sales pending.
Other deals will be included in the updated book list. We
look forward to following up on all the promises made at the
largest international book fair in the world, in the industry
simply known as FRANKFURT.

Agency Seeking Sub-Agents for Scandinavia and Italy
New York — The Doris S. Michaels Literary Agency, Inc. announced
today that it is seeking sub-agents for the Scandinavian and
Italian book markets. The agency prides itself in its many
international book deals and is working hard to expand its
reach even further. In addition to the United States, the
agency has placed books in the United Kingdom, France, Germany,
Italy, Japan, Korea, and China, among other countries.
“Having lived four
years in Zurich and two years in London, international sales
are important to me,” said Doris Michaels, founder and president.
“The United States still boasts the world’s biggest book market,
but it’s not the only one. Translating titles is increasingly
important to an author’s success.”
The list of the
agency’s current international sub-agents is displayed
online.
NOTE 11/1/99: We’ve
now filled both positions. Please see the list.
