RHUBARB SUMMER

A compelling coming of age story destined to become a classic as both a novel and a film. Revolving around Jo Anderson’s wise and humorous remembrance of her twelfth birthday during an idyllic summer, the story explores Jo’s relationship with her friend, Polly, and with those from her hometown of Pine Point: Miss Congreve, a reputed witch; Albert, her pale and gaunt nephew; Aunt Neffie; Mr. Nestor, a fanatic leader of a fire-breathing church; his teenage daughter Anne-Marie; and Elrod Sutter, a high school dropout and part of a backwoods clan known to be both violent and entirely too familiar with their cousins.

Rhubarb Summer has a unique, double climax sure to be remembered long after the last page is read. Lana McGraw Boldt is the author of two Bantam Books novels: Flower of the Pacific (1984) and Fionna’s Will (1987), with an international sale in Norway.

SOME PERSONAL PAPERS

JoAllen Bradham’s thought provoking Some Personal Papers won the 1994 Novelists Breakthrough Award in Southern and Southwestern Fiction, and was originally published by the Texas Review Press.

“The reader is challenged, faced with deciding if Miss Genie, respected director of children’s services in a large Georgia city, is a clear-minded benefactor or a madwoman and victim of her own circumstances, or some of each…Although Bradham’s prose is much tighter than Faulkner’s, the complexity of her protagonist’s character approaches the multifaceted personalities in Faulkner’s best work. Eugenia Putman is a figure who would be at home in Light in August, for example.”

Patricia Henley

IN THE RIVER SWEET

IN THE RIVER SWEET is Patricia’s second novel, following HUMMINGBIRD HOUSE, which was a finalist for the 1999 National Book Award and The New Yorker Award for Best Fiction 1999.  IN THE RIVER SWEET tells the story of the Bond family, contemporary mid-western Catholics – Eddie, Ruth Anne, and their grown daughter, Laurel -- who reach an emotional critical mass when secrets long suppressed can no longer be concealed.

In 1967, at the age of nineteen, Ruth Anne left Michigan for Vietnam in order to be near Eddie Bond while he was in the Army.  While there, Ruth Anne experiences an improbable and unsustainable love affair with a Vietnamese man and bears his child, relinquishing her son to her lover and his mother.  Ruth Anne has kept her son a secret and 33 years later, he contacts her for the first time and wants to meet her.  Irrevocable changes are destined to occur.

Patricia Henley is the author of three short-story collections, Friday Night at the Silver Star (Graywolf Press (1986), The Secret of Cartwheels (Graywolf Press 1992), and Worship of the Common Heart (MacMurray & Beck 2000) and Hummingbird House (MacMurray & Beck, 1999), a novel.  She teaches the MFA Creative Writing Program at Purdue University.

Praise for The Secret of Cartwheels:

“A wonderful book by a significant writer whose prose dances and paints and sings, and shines a beautiful light on the human heart.  Her delight in the physical world of the earth and the flesh is a spiritual celebration of being alive.”
                  --Andre Dubus

Praise for Worship of the Common Heart:

“These stories, by a marvelous writer who speaks from both the heart and the head, are as comfortable as well-worn denim.”                          --Publishers Weekly, starred review

“It is in these stories that Henley is in her glory:…she can tear open the chests of her characters and hang their insides out to dry in the wind.  In the simplest places, populated by people with simple lifestyles, Henley can expose the tumult and complexity within.  When Henley completes a story, a scene, even a paragraph, she leaves her reader slightly stung, but grateful at the gift of an unvarnished truth.”
                    --Salon.com

Praise for Hummingbird House:

“Deeply felt…A heartbreaking book.”
                    --John Sayles

Hummingbird House is obsidian, a dark blade, a stone, a mirror.  It begins with a birth and ends with a death, driving home the hard truth of human vulnerability and cruelty…Henley guides her readers through this tale one graceful and slicing sentence at a time.”

THE JANITOR

Too often we find ourselves losing sight of the important things in life, as work and stress take over. This is the situation in which CEO Roger Kimbrough finds himself in THE JANITOR, a Christian business parable with mass appeal. Title character Bob Tidwell helps Roger to reevaluate how he is leading his business and his life, and ultimately how to become more fulfilled. Bob passes on six directives from his late wife:

  1. Recharge vs. Discharge
  2. View Family as a Blessing, Not a Responsibility
  3. Pray, Don’t Pout
  4. Pass it Around
  5. Don’t Spend, Invest!
  6. Leave a Legacy

Each of these directives is applied to Roger’s (and the reader’s) business and family life, creating a firm path toward figuring out his purpose. Roger and Bob, the CEO and the janitor, form a beautiful bond that crosses barriers and touches those around them. The message Bob has for Roger spreads to neighbors, colleagues and to the reader as well.

SWIMMING LESSONS

Lynne Hugo and Anna Tuttle Villegas have created a unique and deeply touching novel about an unlikely friendship between two women.

When Marna, an Olympic hopeful who abandons her swimming career for love, first sees savvy, professional Laurel, friendship is the furthest thing from her mind. But Laurel reveals that she’s not quite as perfect as her intimidating appearance indicates – she’s absolutely terrified of the water. She asks Marna for swimming lessons, and slowly these two women become friends. As they learn to trust their friendship, the secrets of their lives spill out, and a shocking discovery threatens to undo their personal lives. And their connection, one that so many women will recognize and celebrate, is sorely tested.

“Swimming Lessons is moving and absolutely beautiful. Lynne Hugo and Anna Tuttle Villegas write with a freshness and generosity of heart that surprises and pulls you in close to the characters. They are a literary match made in heaven. This story of fragility, courage, and redemption is a triumph.”
— Linda Raymond
author, Rocking the Babies

“At a glance, this novel is merely separate stories about two unacquainted and seemingly dissimilar women, told in alternating chapters, and initially, it is. But then, slowly and effortlessly (and even a bit unexpectedly), the paths of the characters begin to cross. The novel takes on a whole new dimension to become a superb tale about the empowerment these women find through their burgeoning friendship…Engrossing and thoroughly enjoyable, Swimming Lessons will leave women either wishing they were blessed with such a beautiful friendship or thanking their lucky stars they are.”

Y2K:

It’s Already Too Late

The Year 2000 computer problem, known in the industry as Y2K, is real. Operating on its own diesel electricity and private satellite network, Solvang Solutions is the only company still operable after New Year’s Eve 1999. Mark Solvang frantically directs his Year 2000 repair firm to restore the world. He discovers powerful forces exploiting the meltdown and finds himself in a race to save his life.

Y2K It’s Already Too Late is based on evidence from congressional testimony, military documents, and reports from computing experts. It’s a chilling look at what’s just around the corner.

“With dizzying action...it carries you through a worldwide power outage, runs on banks, bloody raids on suburban grocery stores, plane crashes, massacres on the streets of Los Angeles. The second half of the book even takes a turn into international espionage.
Denver Post

Truth may be stranger than fiction, but that didn’t stop Los Angeleno Jason Kelly from turning a real-life technology nightmare into a novel. Kelly’s Y2K — It’s Already Too Late — apparently the first novel inspired by the year 2000 computer glitch — envisions massive failures of banks, phones and power plants that ultimately make the U.S. vulnerable to an attack by the Chinese military.
— Los Angeles Times

“If you're interested in learning more about the Y2K bug and the geek-speak used in more technical non-fiction books doesn't appeal to you, Y2K — It’s Already Too Late may be a good choice. It features a lot of factual information and is a good example of fiction being cleverly wrapped into a scenario that’s frighteningly plausible.”

ALL WE KNOW OF HEAVEN

Anna Tuttle Villegas has, with this, her first novel, achieved a small miracle: She has written a story that will be remembered as one of the most moving and memorable love stories ever.

Though Austin Barclay is tall, handsome, smart, and kind, and Delores Meredith is pretty, vivacious, and brave, these two lovers feel to us totally believable and human.

“Emily Dickinson stanzas, which begin each chapter and foreshadow the plot, are appropriately selected (often tearfully so) in this promising first novel.”
— Booklist

“If Emily Dickinson were alive and living in California, she might write a book like this one – a bittersweet tale full of pleasure and pain, where nothing is quite as simple as it should be, yet good will prevails.”
— Mary Morris
author, House Arrest and Nothing to Declare

“Anna Tuttle Villegas has written a tender, lyrical story all about the texture of ordinary life and the mysterious way that love and loss make the ordinary suddenly extraordinary. Villegas tells a heartbreaking story in a way that leaves the reader with a sense of hopefulness and even triumph.”
— Joyce Maynard

WHEN LUBA LEAVES HOME:
A Portrait in Stories

As a follow up to her stunning debut novel, The Sky Unwashed, Irene Zabytko has written a story collection that explores the core of emotion that links Ukrainian immigrants in 1960s Chicago.  Narrated by Luba, the college age daughter of two Ukrainian scientists, the people who live on Wheat Street struggle with the values and pressures of a new world, but cannot break the common tie that binds them.

Irene Zabytko is a first generation Ukranian-American who was born and raised in Chicago.  She received her MFA from Vermont College and her debut novel, The Sky Unwashed, was published by Algonquin Books in 2000.  The Sky Unwashed was selected for the Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers program, and was chosen by the New England Booksellers Association as one of the best books of 2000.

Praise for The Sky Unwashed:

“Though Zabytko makes the horror of Chernobyl clear enough -- faces wither, teeth and hair fall out… -- the greater and more grinding catastrophe seems to be the crumbling Soviet state…”
--The New York Times Book Review

“One of the joys of reading is coming across a novel in which the author’s voice is so perfectly wedded to an important subject that the blending becomes art…Zabytko’s voice becomes the voice of the forgotten in a moving and memorable book.”
--W.D. Wetherell, author of Chekhov’s Sister

“…a wrenching novel…The Sky Unwashed tells its harrowing story with quiet compassion and moving empathy.”

THE VOICE OF AUTHORITY: 10 Communication Strategies Every Leader Needs to Know

Fortune 500 consultant Dianna Booher is one of the world's foremost authorities on public speaking and business communication. She has trained and consulted for some of the top executives in leading companies-and she has heard all the grumbling between departments about “the lack of communication” today. Using 10 clear-cut strategies, she will show you exactly what to say, how to say it, when to say it, and even how to present yourself credibly-all crucial elements in business today.

Be Complete. Be Consistent. Be Concerned. These rules-and the seven others Booher outlines in this book-sound simple enough. But these essentials of good communication mark the difference between failure and success for any business, career, or relationship. Even if your communication technology changes-from e-mail and voice mail to teleconferencing and blogging-the rules remain the same. You have to be credible as a communicator.

The Voice of Authority is loaded with practical tips to help you

Sell your ideas and expand your influence
Inspire and motivate others to be part of a winning team
Handle crises in a way that builds rather than destroys trust
Identify critical characteristics that increase your credibility

VERBAL TEA

Published book available February 2008.

Scientists say that it is our language, our ability to communicate, that separates us from the animals. It is extremely important in this age of high speed communications that people communicate correctly. This is twofold. First, grammar is hardly taught in school anymore, and commonly misused words and phrases sprinkle correspondence and speech. Everyone is susceptible to these kinds of mistakes, from CEOs to high school students. VERBAL TEA attacks the most commonly confused rules of grammar and syntax through a light and easy to understand approach that any of grammar offender can follow.

Dianna Booher is one of the top 20 speakers in the country and has a proven sales record of over 40 published works. She founded Booher Consultants in 1980 and has since spread her valuable techniques around the world.

ONE STEP AT A TIME

Lenor Madruga had stunning beauty, vibrant health, a handsome, loving husband, two wonderful young children, and a successful modeling career when, on the morning of her 32nd birthday, she discovered the small hard lump on her thigh.  Within a few nightmare months, she had barely saved her life – and lost her entire left leg to cancer.

First published in 1979 by McGraw-Hill and then translated into six languages, ONE STEP AT A TIME TELLS THE STORY OF Lenor’s struggle to return from the abyss of pain, drug addiction, self-torment, and depression that threatened to swallow up her entire life.  Internationally embraced as the inspirational story of the 1980s, it is a triumphant story of her determination to dance, swim, water-ski, ride horses, make love – and do almost everything she used to do before her operation.  It is a story that will make you realize how great the power of love and faith and courage can be – the revelation of a woman who overcame all the odds to become whole again.

YOU LOOK TOO YOUNG TO BE A MOM:
Teen Mothers Speak Out on Love, Learning, and Success

Published book available 2004

YOU LOOK TOO YOUNG TO BE A MOM is an anthology of writing by women who became mothers as teens.  The contributors have written about subjects ranging from love to education, sleep deprivation to stereotypes.

Overwhelmingly, advice to teen mothers stems from the assumption that these young women have made a mistake and are a liability, but the contributors to this anthology write unapologetically and at times defiantly about the real joys and challenges of being young mothers.

Ariel Gore, teenage mother, founding editor of Hip Mama, and author of several books, is writing a foreword and Deborah Davis is the author of two YA novels published by Crown and Atheneum.  She has worked for six years with "at risk" teenagers, and as a doula, a birth assistant, for pregnant teenagers.

This book provides an overview of US past performance and prediction of UK future prospects of the Internet industry and all its different sectors.

BLUE CATS AND CHARTREUSE KITTENS:
How Synesthetes Color Their Worlds

For most people, sight, sound, smell, taste and touch are experienced singularly and are not often (without the help of hallucinogenic drugs) experienced at the same time in the same context: Chicken doesn’t taste pointy, the letter R is not orange, and the month of January isn’t garnet red. One in 2,000 people, however, has reported having synesthetic experiences – where the customary boundaries between the senses seem to break down and sight and sound, or taste and touch, become interwoven.

Patricia Duffy has synesthesia. She only realized it when she turned 16 and was reminiscing with her father about when she learned to write the alphabet. She told her father that she was shocked and delighted to discover that to make the letter ”R,” all she had to do was add a line to the ”P,” thereby changing it from a yellow letter into an orange letter by merely adding a line.

BLUE CATS AND CHARTREUSE KITTENS is an exploration of a condition that modern science has largely ignored. Pat’s personal story is augmented by her portraits of other synesthetes, and by the writings of many of the most famous synesthetes: Nabokov, Rimbaud, Richard Feynman, and many others. With an introduction by Peter Grossenbacher, the scientist at the National Institute of Health leading the studies about synesthesia, the project is a balance of both the scientific and the personal side of this fascinating neurological phenomenon.

Patricia Duffy is a language instructor at the United Nations and has had articles published in Ms. Magazine, The Boston Globe, New York Newsday, and The Village Voice, among other publications.

CYCLES:
How We’ll Live, Work, and Buy

CYCLES will show that we are at the dawn of a “lifecycle revolution.”  Spurred by increasing longevity, the speed of technologic change and the aging of boomers, this lifecycle revolution offers a release from a set of oppressive values, attitudes, and expectations that have defined our lives, how we’ve lived, and the kinds of products and services we buy -- and when we buy them.

The new cyclic model that is emerging is more flexible in nature, offering each of us the chance to break free of the age-old assembly line of prescribed life passages and repeatedly reinvent ourselves so that we can, for example, go back to school at 25, 45, or 65, start a new career at 30, 50, or 70, or retire more than once in a lifetime.

This lifecycle revolution is hanging the very essence of who we are, what we do, when we do it, and how we’ll buy products and services -- everything from insurance to adventure travel, from cosmetics to real estate.  For business, the book offers a unique snapshot of the new empowered consumer and a new model for segmenting the marketplace.

Maddy Dychtwald is a nationally recognized public speaker, marketing executive, and entrepreneur.  Ms. Dychtwald is considered an authority on demographically-driven trends.  She co-founded Age Wave, Inc., the nation's premier consulting firm focused on the mature market.  She has been frequently featured in newspapers, magazines, and trade publications nationwide, has delivered speeches to more than 50,000 people worldwide over the last few years, and is an award winning producer of numerous communications programs including a PBS special depicting a positive image of aging.

BATTLE OF MOGADISHU: First-hand Accounts from Operation Gothic BATTLE OF MOGADISHUSerpent

"At liftoff, Matt Eversmann said a Hail Mary."

So begins Mark Bowden's New York Times Bestseller, Black Hawk Down.  It tells the story of the US offensive in Somalia in 1993 and is one of the most riveting and frightening accounts of warfare ever recorded.  Bowden's portrayal of the brave men of the Ranger and Delta forces immortalized them as heroes.

Matt Eversmann is one of those heroes.  His acts of bravery in battle made it to the big screen when Black Hawk Down was released nationwide.

After leading his men through the bloody streets of Mogadishu, Somalia -- the longest sustained firefight involving American troops since the Vietnam War -- Matt Eversmann emerged physically intact but emotionally transformed. With a foreword by Mark Bowden, MODERN WAR is an anthology of first person narratives by the men who fought this battle, then men of the 75th Ranger Battalion.  The closest one can get to knowing what life is like in battle, MODERN WAR is as chilling as it is moving.

SELLING WOMEN SHORT: The Landmark Battle for Workers'SELLING WOMEN SHORT Rights at Wal-Mart

SELLING WOMEN SHORT, written by journalist Liza Featherstone, explores the groundbreaking lawsuit brought against Wal-Mart Stores Inc., with more than one million current and former female employees seeking class-action status -- making it the biggest employment discrimination lawsuit ever.  The battle will be public and it will be brutal, and it could potentially change the way women everywhere are treated in the workplace.  Liza uses the case less as a narrative and more as a springboard from which to look at Wal-Mart, sexism, low-wage work, and poverty.

Liza Featherstone writes on both feminism and labor issues.  She is a frequent contributor to The Washington Post, The Nation, and Newsday.  Her work has also been published in The New York Times Book Review, Rolling Stone, Ms., Nerve, Salon, The Village Voice, The Boston Phoenix, The San Francisco Bay Guardian, among many other publications.  She is the author of STUDENTS AGAINST SWEATSHOPS which was published by Verso in Spring 2002.

HOW TO LAND YOUR DREAM JOB:
No Resume! And Other Secrets to Get You in the Door

Formerly DON'T SEND A RESUME.

DON’T SEND A RESUME has been relaunched as HOW TO LAND YOUR DREAM JOB. Jeff explains the intricacies of landing a job by comparing the interview to a sales call.  He teaches the reader to think in terms of using a resume as sales literature, that the potential employer is actually your customer, and that you are both the salesman and the product being sold.  He uses fun and interesting examples such as chapter one, which is called "You Are A Box Of Cereal."  Perfect for recent graduates or people making career changes at any point in their lives, DON’T SEND A RESUME plays it straight.  Jeff offers some tried and true advice, but in the tradition of How to Become CEO, has ideas and strategies most of us have never heard of, let alone thought of.  He has interviewed thousands of people and has compiled his advice in this remarkable book that not only makes sense but is fun to read as well.
